The Bram Stoker Awards are an initiative of the Horror Writer's Association (HWA), named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the seminal horror work, Dracula. The Stoker Awards began in 1987. The Stoker Awards are non-juried awards. Any Horror work first published in the English language may be considered for a Stoker during the year of its publication. The HWA membership at large recommends worthy works for consideration.
Prior to 2005 awards were given in twelve categories but since then in eight: Novel, First Novel, Short Fiction, Long Fiction, Fiction Collection, Poetry Collection, Anthology, and Nonfiction. In addition, Lifetime Achievement Stokers are occasionally presented to individuals whose entire body of work has substantially influenced Horror.
30th March, 2008- The Bram Stokers for 2007 have been announced at this year’s World Horror Convention.

He is the son of author Stephen King but for more than 10 years, he was just another struggling writer, Genevieve Swart writes. (full article from Sydney Morning Herald, July 2007)
"My real secret to keeping a low profile was failure," says Joe Hill, whose full name is Joseph Hillstrom King.
"Nothing helps a writer stay under the radar like not getting published. I got piles of rejections. I wrote four novels I couldn't sell to save my life."
Then came Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel, a supernatural thriller about an ageing heavy metal star who buys a ghost on the internet. Reviews in the US have been glowing (Time called it "a top-notch piece of horror fiction"), translation rights have been sold in more than 15 countries and Warner Bros snapped up the movie rights for a six-figure sum, with Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) lined up to direct.
Success means King's son must finally step forward to claim his inheritance but he's glad to have made it on merit. "Writing as Joe Hill, the goal was to avoid getting special favors or treatment. If I sold a story, I wanted to know that it sold because an editor genuinely liked it and felt it had qualities that would excite a reader," Hill says.
Heart-Shaped Box is said to have been hot property even before publishers knew of his famous father. "My editor didn't know anything about me except she liked the book," Hill says, "but before the contract was inked I called her and [confessed]."
His agent, Mickey Choate, represented Hill for eight years before finding out, which must have been the literary agent's version of The Frog Prince fairytale. Warner heard only a log line - a one-sentence summary - and wanted to buy film rights on that basis, Hill says. "I think it was, 'A man buys a ghost on the internet and what happens to him after UPS delivers it'. Article continues
Erika Mailmans The Witch's Trinity: A Novel headed up a scary bunch of contenders for this years Bram Stoker. Mailman's book fires off i n 1507 in a remote German village. Suffering from a famine, the villagers are happy to see the arrival of a friar who promises to rid them of the curse that has brought the famine. Güde Müller is an elderly woman whose daughter-in-law would prefer one less hungry mouth at the table. What's more, she's experiencing strange visions. Is it bad bread or something worse? Worse is, of course, a village using high-tech reproduced witch-finding manuals to point a finger. No, worse is knowing that the finger should be pointed at you.
Mailman has a personal perspective on the matter of witchcraft. Apparently she discovered a witch in her family, Mary Parsons, who was tried not once, but several times for witchcraft in Massachusetts in the 1600's, and – this is a story you don't often hear – found innocent. Mary Parsons lived into her eighties. One of the lucky ones.
Ms. Mailman was up against The Terror: A Novel by Dan Simmons (right). Mr. Simmon's arctic adventure-dark fantasy novel was on a variety of Top 10 lists for 2007, including Entertainment Weekly's Top 10 Books of 2007, USA Today's Top 10 Books, Stephen King's "Top 10 from My Reading in 2007" list also quoted in Entertainment Weekly, and was # 1 on Amazon.com's "2007 Top 10 SF and Horror Novels" list. The Terror was also in the Top 12 of all books rated by Book Sense, the journal of independent bookstores.
The two early front-runners missed out in the end. Whilst The Guardener's Tale by Bruce Boston will have it's day in the sun, The Missing
by Sarah Langan, took out the main. The latter could certainly do with a boast in sales in GB. Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel
by newcomer, Joe Hill, with a double chance having been nominated in both the Novel and First Novel categories.
Those like to be the first to discover new talent might do worse than check out the UK January released I Will Rise by Michael Louis Calvillo, also a contender in First novel. Lisa Morton, a previous Bram Stoker Award winning author with Tested, described Mr. Calvillo's book thus:
"I WILL RISE is like the bastard love child of William S. Burroughs and Bentley Little, and is the biggest waiting-to-
be-discovered cult novel of the decade. It's hip, witty, scary, strange, apocalyptic, sad, and full of beautifully observed moments. In a perfect world, American readers would already be slavering in anticipation of whatever Michael Louis Calvillo puts out next."
High praise indeed. The Memory Tree by John R. Little and The Hollower
by Mary SanGiovann (right) rounded-out the challengers in the First Book category. Some interesting choices as in the Anthology and Non-Fiction categories. Poetry is a bit of an unknown as we have yet to be exposed to the Horror Poetry genre. KJP
